Judges revealed April 30, 2006 Beverly Lucas 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
Java with the Judges was my favorite of the Coffee Cup series. I loved the background and history summaries. I wish there were more commentary. Ms. Glahn does such a wonderful job with commentary. She has a real gift for putting culture into context. Her discussion on the power of women is compelling.
This study should open up some real conversations with the group.
It is so helpful to have the Biblical text printed in the study. I always have it with me.
Not your usual Bible study July 1, 2006 Mary E. DeMuth (Texas) 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
What a tremendous resource Java with the Judges is! I'd read through Judges a bit perplexed, thankful to study the book in depth through the lenses of Glahn's impeccable research and warm writing style. I'm forever thankful for her insights, particularly this: "Even our flaws can't thwart God's purposes." She presents the judges as flawed, earthy folk and rightly points out God's sovereignty and power, despite loving a people prone to stray. I particularly enjoyed Glahn's discussion of women, how she debunks some common myths and elevates women in the process. An overall refreshing Bible study!
Outstanding Bible Study! April 26, 2006 Ginny S. 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
Java with the Judges is the third study I have completed in Sandra Glahn's Coffee Cup Bible Studies. I'll have to admit that I'd approached this study a little more cautiously and, initially, with a little less excitement. But I was soon pleasantly surprised, as I dug into the chapters, at how much I enjoyed and gleaned from this Old Testament study! The historical information and Biblical links to other passages kept me coming back day after day with a studious appetite and a newness of intrigue to learn more from the often-avoided Old Testament writings. Wow, who'd of thought all those stories about people with strange names could turn out to be so interesting and full of knowledge about our God!

Just read the table of contents May 10, 2006 E. Teske (Maryland, USA) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
The Good Guys, The Good and the Reluctant, Good and Bad, Good or Bad?, Samson the Conflicted, The Ugly... sounds like the cast of characters for a mini-series, right? Welcome to Java with the Judges.
Ms. Glahn's flair for humor, her conversational approach and her scholarly research combine to present Israel's judges as real people. Creative, conflicted, confused at times... Israel's own mini-drama. But Java with the Judges is not just a portrait gallery of Israel's top judges. Glahn takes readers from Biblical observation, to interpretation, to personal application. Yep, even the book of Judges has something applicable for each of us.
One final note: Glahn suggests engaging God through this study with all five senses. Using the resources she provides on her website, you actually CAN create your own portrait gallery of Israel's top judges. Talk about a Bible Study that sticks with you!
