A Look Inside Every Dog Has a Gift (Click on Images to Enlarge)
Product Description Inspiring stories of dogs who do good.
Anyone who has ever had a relationship with a dog will tell you: They want nothing more than to give love and be loved in return. In Every Dog Has a Gift, Rachel McPherson draws on her experience as the founder and executive director of The Good Dog Foundation, the largest animal-assisted therapy organization on the East Coast, to share the amazing stories of dogs that bring hope and healing into our lives.
Much has been said about the heroic roles dogs played following September 11th and Hurricane Katrina in providing support and comfort for the families and victims of these terrible tragedies, but the truth is that millions of dogs around the world are heroes every day. These therapy and service dogs (and often quite ordinary, "uncertified" dogs just like your own!) can:
*serve as the perfect audience for kids who need help with practicing and improving their reading skills;
*hold troubled families together;
*provide a calm and centering presence for autistic children, and
*help individuals who have lost the ability to walk to more easily navigate the world.
Every Dog Has a Gift is a celebration of the gift that each and every dog possesses: the ability to bring the healing power of unconditional love into our lives.

| Customer Reviews: Learn About Some Opportunities For Your Dog June 5, 2010 JRay (Wisconsin) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I recently had to put my cocker spaniel down. My oldest son was heartbroken so we went out to the Humaine Society and got ourselves a lovely beagle hound named Molly. We just adore her. Since then I have just been reading everything I can on dogs. I just finished Love Is The Best Medicine and would recommend that to anyone. This was the next book I picked up. This book is a easy reading book. Rachel Mcpherson is the founder and executuve dirctor of The Good Dog Foundation. She has put together a book full of stories detailing dogs and what they have to offer. Many different breeds offer different services and therapies to childern with autism, helping childern to read, promote healing in hospital settings, and are used as guide dogs. These stories are very inspirational for both the people and dog lover. These stories aren't fluffy at all, and really do a great job promoting the different services a owner might consider for their own dog as well. I was so encouraged by Pepper the dog that childern read to, that I am seriously considering getting my own dog into this training program. Whether you are just looking for a weekend read, or are seriously considering advanced training or wanting to serve your community this book is a A plus. Rachel does a great job giving dog owners tips and resources at the end of each chapter. Get this book and read it. Dogs have a wonderful way with people in need.

That dog can heal June 2, 2010 Sacramento Book Review (Sacramento, CA) 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
//Every Dog Has a Gift// is an assortment of real stories about gentle dogs bringing their furry healing touch to people suffering from misfortunes and adversities. We get an emotional peek at the world of therapy dogs in hospitals, but also in unconventional settings like a school where a dog from The Good Dog Foundation Reading Program helps kids bring their reading up to their grade level. Apparently, kids love reading to a dog. McPherson does not just focus on service dogs, she also tells the stories of regular companion dogs providing stability for owners going through breakups, divorce, work stress, parental abandonment, and homelessness. Two words often repeated in these stories describe a common characteristic that dogs exhibit--unconditional love. It betrays a deeper poverty in our human relationships than we might realize. Particularly moving are the almost miraculous improvements in the quality of life for children with autism who receive a service dog. But it's not all tear-jerkers. McPherson also includes practical resources for readers who might want to get involved with service dog organizations. A wonderful book of miracles that any dog lover (including this reviewer) will enjoy.
